[Yb(η<sup>2</sup>-Ph<sub>2</sub>CNPh)(hmpa)<sub>3</sub>]
(hmpa
= hexamethylphosphoramide), has been directly synthesized by the reaction of ytterbium metal with
<i>N</i>-(diphenylmethylidene)aniline in THF/HMPA and structurally
characterized by X-ray analysis.
