The first dinitrosyls of niobium and tantalum, cis-[M(NO)₂(CNXyl)₄]⁺, have been prepared by direct nitrosylation of [M(CO)₆]^- (M = Nb, Ta) with 2 equiv of [NO]⁺ in the presence of 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, CNXyl. These new complexes have been fully characterized by IR, ¹H, and ¹³C NMR spectra as well as X-ray crystallography.
