We have synthesized dibenzyl complexes of tantalum, Cp*Ta(CH2Ph)22-C,N-Ar-AD) (Ar-AD = 1-aryl-4-phenyl-1-aza-1,3-butadiene) (1a, Ar = Ph; 1b, Ar = o-Tol), by the reaction of the corresponding dichloro complexes Cp*TaCl24-supine-Ar-AD) (2a, Ar = Ph; 2b, Ar = o-Tol) with Mg(CH2Ph)2 in toluene, and their reaction with 1 equiv of XylNC (Xyl = 2,6-dimethylphenyl) afforded amido−imido complexes, Cp*Ta(NAr){N(Xyl)C(CH2Ph)CHCHCHPh}(CH2Ph) (5a, Ar = Ph; 5b, Ar = o-Tol). These complexes were characterized by spectral data and crystallographic studies. The mechanism for the formation of the mixed amido−imido complexes was elucidated by NMR measurement, which detected an iminoacyl complex, Cp*Ta(η2-Ph-AD){C(NXyl)CH2Ph}(CH2Ph) (3a).
