Supramolecular Networks Using Ferrocenyl Ditriazole and Diimidazole Bridges

Supramolecular coordination networks showing redox activity were obtained by reacting ferrocene-based bidentate ligands, 1,1‘-bis[(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)methyl]ferrocene (1) and 1,1‘-bis{[1H-(2-methyl)imidazol-1-yl]methyl}ferrocene (2), with AgNO3, CdCl2, and ZnCl2 using a layering technique. The resulting extended networks display a variety of different conformations, which highlights the flexibility of the bridging ligand:  1·AgNO3 (3), 1-D helical array; 12·CdCl2 (4), 1-D cross-linked network; 1·ZnCl2 (5), 1-D zigzag array; and 2·ZnCl2 (6), 1-D zigzag array.
