An elaborate coordination polymer is formed using the weak Lewis-base [Au(CN)4]- coupled to a Jahn−Teller distorted CuII ion. Such structural complexity is inaccessible if a stronger structure-directing bonding interaction is present, as in the simpler NiII analog.
