The electroreductive intramolecular coupling of phthalimides
with
aromatic aldehydes in the presence of chlorotrimethylsilane and triethylamine
led to five-, six-, and seven-membered cyclized products (58–84%).
The electroreductive cyclization was applied to the total synthesis
of lennoxamine.
